I will give you my background in case it helps to better answer my questions. I am an American citizen and my fiance is a Chinese citizen. We have been separated almost half a year due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. We believe Turkey is the ideal place for us to go while we wait from the global “new normal”. We are basing this decision on cost of living, current open status for tourism, and especially that there is the possibility of gaining short term residency permits. I am allotted 90 days with my evisa but she would only get 30 days.

    1. Is it possible to get short term residency permits for us both within our evisa time frames?

    2. We have the money to stay for a year or two but we would not fit the “investor” category and I read as of January 1st, 2020 the short term residency approval process has become more strict. Is it still possible to be granted short term residency for tourist purposes?

    3. How much does the entire short term residency application cost?

      Hello,
Timeframe to obtain residence permit varies according to the city and available appointment dates. Procedures take the longest in Istanbul, where currently receiving residence permit lasts up to three months. Foreigners, who sobmit residence permit application within their visa time frames are allowed to stay in Turkey legally until receiving residence permit card even if their visa expires during the process. If you have never obtained touristic residence permit in Turkey before, you can be easily granted this kind of permit for up to one year. American citizens are also allowed to extend their permits, however Chinese nationals can obtain touristic residence permit only once within every two years. Cost of governmental fees is 80 USD + 110 TL card fee per person. Applicants must also purchase a health insurance covering the whole requested period of stay. Cost of health insurance depends on applicant’s age and type of policy. If you would like to benefit from our services oür fee is 1500 TL + VAT per person. This fee already includes the cost of one year health insurance policy.

    Hi,
We stayed in Turkey more than 90 days(120 days) as we could not find flight to return back to Iran regarding to covid 19. At airport they did not get any fine/penalty from us regarding to covid 19. My question: Can we return back to Turkey after 3 months or we should wait 6 months pass? Also, after each 90 days, how long we should stay outside Turkey for returning back again?
    Best regards,

    • Expatguide

      Hello,
As you overstay your visa you are allowed to reenter Turkey after staying abroad for at least three months. If you enter the country earlier, you can face a problem on the boarder and most probably you would enter Turkey conditionally and will be obliged to submit residence permit application within 10 days upon your arrival. Citizens of Iran are allowed to stay in Turkey for 90 days within each 180 days, which means that after you stay within the country for 90 days in a row, you must spend following 90 days abroad if you do not obtain residence permit.

    Hello,

I’ve read your website and you said foreigners with a residence permit can find a job, then the employer will apply for work permit for them.

My question is, if a foreigner’s RP application is approved but still waiting for the card, can the company start to apply for the work permit for him/her?

    Thank you!

    • Expatguide

      Hello,
Residence permit card must be issued in order to start work permit application process as copy of valid residence permit card must be included into application. After the residence permit application is approved in the system card is sent to the applicant within few days.

    Hi there,

I will go to Turkey next week and want to apply for a short-term resident permit.

Do you know how long does it take now (under covid-19 situation) from the day I make the appointment online to the day my application is approved? I want to apply in Istanbul.

    Thank you very much!

    • Expatguide

      Hello,
Currently in Istanbul application procedures take approximately 3 months. Please, be informed that this timeframe differs from application to application and the process can take slightly less or more time as well. Once the application is approved residence permit card is sent to applicant’s address.

    thanks

    • Expatguide

      Hello,
Before you spend at least one year in Turkey on basis of work permit, you can not be sponsor for family residence permit application. After you work in Turkey for one year, your spouse and children under 18 years old can obtain family residence permit. As a first application your family members will be eligible only for touristic residence permit application.

Hello, I am Alexandra and I am from Romania which is in the European Union. I would like to tell you something regarding my stay and leave in Turkey.

I entered Turkey on 4th of February and, due to the fact that I am coming from an European Union country, my permission to stay here without any residence permit was 3 months (90 days).

However, because of the Coronavirus, I couldn’t leave Turkey and I had to stay here in May and June. The flights started to appear – they actually became active last week, so I can easily go back to my country.

More than this, I would like to ask you a few questions:

How much should I pay per day and on a monthly basis for staying in Turkey?
Should I pay for the period in which I couldn’t go home because of the Coronavirus and because of a lack of flights (04.05.2020 – 15.06.2020)?
How much time am I allowed to stay in Turkey after the flights become active again?
I am currently living in Antalya. If I want to visit another city, am I allowed to do so? Will the police ban me from doing so or will I have to pay any fee/fine?

Thank you for your time! I am looking forward to hearing from you.

    • Expatguide

      Hello,
According to announcement of Directorate of Migration, foreigners who overstay their visa due to Covid-19 will not pay a fine under condition that they leave Turkey within 30 days after flights to their country are possible. We would not recommend travelling within Turkey if your visa is already expired as you can face a problem in case of police check.

    Hello Expatguide,
After buying the property in Turkey, I can get the resident permit for wife and children up to 18 years. Would you please guide us how to get the resident permit for children over 18 years?
Appreciate your guidance in this regards.
    Thanks and best regards.

    • Expatguide

      Hello,
Property owner, their spouse and children under 18 years old are eligible for residence permit for property owners. Children over 18 years old can only separately apply for other kind of residence permit, e.g. touristic ot student residence permit, however fact that their parents are property owners in Turkey would be a benefit during evaluation process and they can use the same address to submit the application.

Hello! I have read your website https://www.expatguideturkey.com/residence-permits/ and I can see some good questions and answers there.

I would like to ask you something that is not addressed there. I plan to purchase a property in Turkey. On this basis, I can apply for the residence permit based on property ownership.

If I obtain this type of residence permit, but I stay in Turkey less than 6 months a year, will I be considered a tax resident in Turkey?

According to this official Turkish government PDF https://www.gib.gov.tr/sites/default/files/fileadmin/taxation_system2016.pdf

    According to KPMG https://home.kpmg/xx/en/home/insights/2015/11/turkey-thinking-beyond-borders.html

I would be a tax resident if I am ‘domiciled’ in Turkey. The term domiciled here refers to be registered in Turkish address registration system (for a Turkish citizen) and holding a work & residence permit (for an expatriate).

Does this rule apply to the residence permit based on property ownership?

    Thank you kindly.

    Manny

    • Expatguide

      Hello,
As a residence permit holder and property owner in Turkey, only property tax and eventual tax on rental income applies to you within Turkey. If you establish a company in Turkey or obtain work permit, you would be also a subject for income tax. Otherwise you do not need to pay taxes in Turkey on your income from abroad.

    Hello,
If i buy a real estate and get the residence permit and stay in turkey for 5 consecutive years without any interruption, will i be able to get the citizenship? Or do i have to have a work permit and stay for 5 years in order to get it?

    Kind Regards,

    • Expatguide

      Hello,
If you stay in Turkey for five years uninterruptedly on basis of residence permit for property owners you can be eligible for Turkish citizenship application under condition that you can prove having a stable source of income and being covered by general health insurance in Turkey. Work permit is not compulsory for this kind of application, however it would be a benefit during evaluation process. Otherwise, if you obtain work permit and stay within Turkey on this basis also for five years, you can have a right to apply for Turkish citizenship.

    Hi,
I have applied for my touristic 1 year residence permit for the 1 st time, online and submitted the application on June 2 nd, There was no appointment date given until now. I applied in Istanbul. How long would I have to wait for the appointment ? Do I have to mail in my documents or take it with me at my appointment date? Also, can I leave Turkey before my appointment date ( my 90 day e visa expired ), and re- enter before my appointment date?
Thank you so much for your help.

    • Expatguide

      Hello,
Currently in Istanbul receiving the appointment date in some cases takes more than one month. If you are not sure about status of your application, you can check it by calling 157. You will be also informed by email/text message if for your application appointment date will be granted or you should mail the documents to Immigration Office within particular timeframe. As your visa has already expired, if you leave Turkey before the appointment date, you will need a new visa in order to re-enter the country before the appointment.

I am a Uk citizen living in Turkey since 2005, I have long term residence permit.
Many years ago we paid for land (Tarla 3000m) and had a house built according to planning permission of the time which was %5, the house and land are on a Tapu and everything is totally legal. Due to the house/ land being in a village location and various changes in the Law over the years the Tapu is still in the builders name.
I know that foreigners currently have to make an agricultural project if they are buying farmland in order to build a house, BUT as the house is already built Is there any thing that would prevent us from getting the Tapu in our name.
I would really appreciate any information

        Hello,
If you are currently a holder of touristic residence permit, this kind of permit can be obtained only once and you are not eligible for extension or renewal of the document. As a holder of other kind of residence permit, you can be eligible for extension of the document after you reenter Turkey. If you will not be able to enter Turkey before expiration of your current permit, the renewal application must be submitted as a first time application instead of extension.

I am a digital nomad and eCommerce specialist. I am willing to move to Turkey and live there. I already have my business running online in Estonia and Pakistan. Do I still need to have a work permit, whereas I can work from Home.

Also, if I am being a foreigner, I want to teach ENGLISH as I am TESOL certified also.

    • Expatguide

      Hello,
As long as you are working online and your income comes from your business abroad, you do not need to obtain work permit. If you decide to work for a company or language school in Turkey, your future employer must apply for work permit before you start working. Foreigners can not apply for work permit in their own name or without having a job in Turkey. Application for foreigner who has residence permit valid in total for at least 6 months can be done within Turkey. For foreigners who are not residence permit holders, application must be done via Turkish Consulate in their home country.

    Dear Sir/Madam, Good evening.

My name is Nadia Ido, and I am an Italian national with Maltese residence. I have entered Istanbul via direct flight from Malta on the 14.03.2020. Using my Italian passport I entered the country using the 90 days tourist no-VISA.

As there was no direct repatriation flight back to Malta and also the Malta International Airport is closed, I would like to confirm with you what will be the situation for me if I overstay the 90 days here in Turkey?

    Thank you for your help!

    • Expatguide

      Hello,
If you overstay the visa-free period of 90 days, you need to pay a fine while leaving Turkey. You can find official amounts of fees for overstaying in our article below:
The consequences of overstaying in Turkey

Please, be informed that final decision on the amount of fine will be taken by customs at the airport and it can differ from official amounts.
