Short History of Adana

Adana’s history dates back to about 6,000 years ago. Adana is one of the most important cities of the Ancient Cilicia Region. It is the cradle of many civilizations, from the Hittites to the Ottomans. Archaeological findings in the region have unearthed human settlements dating back to the Paleolithic Age. With the Ankara Agreement signed on 20 October 1921 as a result of the diplomatic success of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk showed during the War of Independence, France left Adana and its surroundings (5 January 1922). NATO Air Base was established in İncirlik in 1955. The base was used effectively in the Gulf War (1991) and the Iraq War (2003). Finally, Adana won the metropolitan title in 1986.
